Broke and Cheap in SF!

Here a few of my favorite picks for the upcoming week of April 29th to May 5th! These cheap events were hand-picked for broke and/or cheap SF State students.

Monday, April 29th:

FREE mini burgers at Super Duper Burger! This is an annual event, and the 5 locations will be giving out burgers starting at 3pm to the first 100 people in line. Click the link for more details


Tuesday, April 30th:

It’s international Jazz day: enjoy a FREE jazz concert! Hot Club of San Francisco, Left Bank Trio and The Jazzschool of Berkeley will be performing at 1749 Union Street at this annual event. Click here to RSVP


Wednesday, May 1st:

Ever wanted to try AcroYoga and Slackline classes? Well, here’s your chance! YogaSlackers NorCal are offering a series of free classes at the Athleta location in the Fillmore Street location–don’t miss out on this awesome opportunity! You will be able to take part in a 3-part series in which you play with elements of partner poses and dynamic balancing on a 1″ piece of webbing anchored a few feet from the ground. Starts at 7:30 but arrive early to ensure a spot because the class is limited to 15 people! Click for more details.


Thursday, May 2nd:

First Thursdays of the month: art walk from 5:30-7:30 head over to your favorite gallery in SF to check out the artwork. Click here for more details:

First Thursday of every month: Lower Polk Art Walk! The Fern Alley is transformed into an outdoor night gallery for local independent artists.


Friday, May 3rd:

Tres de Mayo Block party! Cinco de Mayo is coming up, but you know how SF always likes to party? Well, there is going to be a block party in the financial district with dj’s, food trucks, and drinks available to those who are 21+. Click the link for more details on facebook:


Saturday, May 4th:

Who doesn’t love going to Dolores park and celebrating Cinco de Mayo at the same time?! There is going to be a Cinco de Mayo Festival in Dolores Park with cultural performances, live music, and many more fun festivities!

  • 10am – Zumba-thon Exercise Class ($10 donation)
  • 11:30am – Welcome by Mission Neighborhood Centers Board President, Executive Director, Consul General of Mexico, Supervisor Campos and Joaquin Torres, Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services.
  • Noon – Mission Neighborhood Centers, Senior Chorus, “Coro Solera”
  • 12:15pmMission District Young Musicians
    Directed by Martha Rodriguez-Salazar, this ensemble of 26 middle and high school youth from the Mission District plays música bailable including favorites from Mexico, Colombia and Cuba.
  • 1:15pmMs. Berta Olivia, a gifted ranchera vocalist accompanied by talented a Mariachi group.
  • 2:15pm – American Red Cross
  • 2:20pm – Buyepongo is a classic story of friends coming together out of their passion for creating, learning, and playing music.
  • 3pmConjunto Picante is bringing back the chart busting sound of the “Fania All Stars” hard Salsa Music of the 1970s. Founder and Composer Tony Rodriguez’s 12-piece orchestra cultivates a full and vibrant sound, portraying the sounds that are reminiscent of the Salsa era that brought Fania Recording artists to the forefront of Latin music.
  • 4pmEdgardo & Candela are an intense and high energy Bay Area salsa band.
  • 5pmEnsambles Ballet Folklórico de San Francisco, preserving the tradition of Mexican folk dance with quality, authenticity and colorful costumes. There will be several 15 minute presentations and each will showcase a different region in Mexico.

Sunday, May 5th:

Cinco de Mayo Taco Festival and Piñata Party! (2 day event–on Saturday too). Head over to the SOMA for a fun-filled celebration that includes food trucks, music, and treat-filled piñatas! Free with Facebook RSVP:

Free hot dog day! Head over to the Inner Richmond to check out some unique art work while munching on a hot dog! This event happens once a month (on Sundays) , at 515 Balboa St., from 1-6pm. Click here for more details: http://www.frankenartmart.com/hotdogs.html
