Formerly home to the SFUSD School of the Arts, the West Campus Green will soon be a well needed addition to the San Francisco State Campus.
Prior to the development of West Campus Green, students were limited in the areas and facilities they could use for intramurals, recreation activities, and leisure. Being active on the quad and other grassy areas was prohibited due to the limitations of real grass upkeep. Additionally, the main quad and Cox Stadium are not available for intramurals, recreational activities and casual leisure in the way the campus community requires. Fortunately, the West Campus Green will feature an all-weather sports field with artificial turf grass and night field lighting so that students are able to have an area to freely play sports pickup games and intramurals.
West Campus Green will help bring stronger student life programming and activities to the SF State Campus. This new space will provide for increased opportunities for organizations, student groups and programs sponsored by the Campus Recreation Department. Campus Recreation will be able to venture outdoors, expanding current programs and developing new ones. New intramural leagues will include flag football and outdoor soccer. Sport Clubs such as Rugby and the Ultimate & Disc Golf Club will have a place to practice and hold games. There will also be open hours for students to use for informal pick-up games with their friends.
Next to the turf will be a large natural grass open space with an amphitheater and large plaza with picnic tables, benches, and room for an event stage, club activities, information tabling, and other community engagement.
For those who would like to study outside and bask in the sunshine while getting a break from being inside, wireless Internet will be available as well as electrical power outlets on the West Campus Green.
The western plaza at the entry from Font Blvd provides room for even stages serving the amphitheater, quiet lunchtime reading, food trucks, or even class meetings.
SF State has kept up the environmental aspect of the West Campus Green as well and will surround the green area with newly planted trees, designed to shelter the site from wind and provide enhanced bird habitat.
The project is currently scheduled to be open to use starting early summer 2013. Reservation policies and procedures are under development, and will be posted during summer for the fall 2013 semester.
